clay, sekam (rice skin), water
Pedurungan, Semarang, Central Java
Bata sekam is made from a mixture of clay and sekam (rice skin). The clay originates from the sediments of the river running across Pedurungan Village. The bricks are molded manually, then sun-dried for several days before they are piled in the fireplace for burning. The burning takes place for around 5-6 days. The use of the rice skins creates rough surface of the brick, which allows for cements or plasters to stick better on the bricks during the construction.
